As executive vice president and provost of the university, C. L. Max Nikias is USC's chief academic officer and the second-ranking officer under the president.

All of the university's deans report to the provost, as do the divisions of student affairs, student religious life, information technology services and enrollment services. He also chairs the Clinical Operations Oversight Committee of the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Nikias has served as USC's chief academic officer since June 2005. Additionally, in April 2008, he was named inaugural holder of the Malcolm R. Currie Chair in Technology and the Humanities, USC's first endowed faculty position honoring accomplishment in both technology and the humanities.

Nikias has been on the USC faculty since 1991 and served as dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering from 2001 to 2005. Before becoming dean, he was the founding director of the USC Viterbi School's Integrated Media Systems Center, the sole National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for multimedia and Internet research.
